Systems Design

Excellent commercial application systems design really demands some strange skills. One of the these strange skills is the ability to listen and hear exactly what a client is saying about the current manual system in use. Another, strange skill, which is seemingly never taught is most computer schools across India is business models and the art of business modeling.

I'm sure there are a lot of individuals who will disagree strongly with these comments of mine. Having said this let me hasten to add that these comments come from the distillation of experience. About 20 years of experience designing commercial applications. Honestly, I've gradually changed from bad to modest to good to what I now percieve to be excellent systems design over these years. The skills that I used (and honed) most in this journey were the art of listening and business modeling. All my other computing skillscame in secondary to these.

Good systems design always allows a commercial application to run on the minimum hardware and software resources completely successfully, while delivering exactly what a client requires. Wishful thinking ?? I don't think so, in fact, I can vouch for the fact that this is not wishful thinking at all.

I've put some of my thoughts on paper. I usually do. Basically I'm blessed with a memory like a colander (i.e. what goes in at the top generally gets out of the holes at the bottom), memory leak they called it the last time I checked, hence when I'm on to a good thing I generally jot it down in M.S. Word file for reference later. I wonder how many people out there suffer from the same disease ?? it would be nice to know I'm not unique, on the other hand its always great to be unique ...
